Responsibilities
- Perform grade checking and verification using levels, lasers, and grade stakes to ensure accurate elevations and alignment
- Interpret construction drawings, specifications, and pipe profiles for underground servicing installation
- Establish and maintain grades for excavation, bedding, and pipe installation
- Install underground utilities including storm, sanitary, and watermain systems
- Lay, align, and join pipe sections (PVC, concrete, HDPE, ductile iron) to required line and grade
- Prepare trenches, including bedding and backfill, in accordance with project specifications
- Direct and assist equipment operators during excavation, trenching, and backfilling operations
- Ensure proper compaction and installation of materials to meet engineering standards
- Locate and identify existing underground utilities and ensure safe excavation practices
- Work closely with survey crews, supervisors, and inspectors to maintain accuracy and tolerances
- Inspect pipe installation to ensure quality, line, and grade compliance
- Safely operate tools and equipment including lasers, pipe lasers, compactors, and hand tools
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, including trench safety and shoring practices
- Follow all company health and safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times
- Support labourers and junior crew members as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- 3–5+ years of experience in heavy civil construction, specifically in grading and underground pipe installation
- Proven experience as a Grademan and/or Pipe Layer on municipal or infrastructure projects
- Strong ability to read and interpret construction drawings, profiles, and grade stakes
- Solid understanding of elevations, slopes, and grade control for underground services
- Experience installing storm, sanitary, and watermain systems
- Knowledge of trenching, shoring, and excavation safety requirements
- Proficient with layout equipment including lasers and pipe lasers
- Experience working around heavy equipment and directing operators safely
- Strong attention to detail with a focus on accuracy and quality
